    Review

Lina and Cassie desperately want a pet -- one they could take to the Pet Parade at the end of the week. Cassie in particular is certain she could win "Best Dressed Pet" with her costuming and decorating skills. But the girls aren't allowed pets -- and it seems the parade is completely out of reach. But when Lina's neighbour Bernadette asks for their help with a pet-sitting emergency, it seems the girls have got their chance!

But Gus the cat is more than they bargained for. He escapes out an open window, and when the girls go to find him, they discover that they can hear him talk when they're together! And what Gus says is very sad. He says he gets left alone all the time, that he's always getting blamed for things, and that no-one loves him. To prove his point, he makes a giant mess in Lina's house -- but the girls take responsibility for Gus instead of blaming it on him.

At the Pet Parade, Gus appears out of the blue and asks the girls to enter him as their pet -- the way they took responsibility made him feel loved and wanted. And with Cassie's skills, he easily wins best-dressed pet!

This is a sweet and light-hearted read. The girls' integrity and care are a great model, and Gus's loneliness tugs at the heartstrings, but there's enough costumes and mischief to make it pacey and fun.
