Amira has a magpie. He is the most beautiful, strangest of creatures ...

Amira imagines her magpie flying across the world, to visit the family she left behind when she escaped her homeland. And as she flies, she flies with him and she is free.

Amira's Magpie is a story of friendship, family and escape; of bravery and resilience in the face of hardship. It is the story of hope we find in small happinesses, even when it seems like all hope is lost.

    Review

Amira has a strange and beautiful magpie, who writes love letters to her in the sky with its paint-daubed wings and sings to her. Amira often imagines her magpie flying to sing to her grandfather, who is far away in the country she escaped from. When Amira misses her home and starts to forget her grandfather's face, she remembers that she will always have her beautiful friend, who sings to her the song of her home.

This book's storytelling consists of poetic, simple sentences. The stunning watercolour illustrations are mostly black and white apart from a few pieces of clothing and the magpie's brown eyes. Swirls of paint simulate the magpie's movement and create an artful reading experience.

A gentle yet powerful story of longing, courage and hope that may well appear in the CBCA Awards 2022.
